absolutely unique carved chair - monk's portrait

the monk's chair
This chair belonged to my great grandfather and has been in the family since at least the late 1800s. The story is that it was one of a set from a private beer garden in New York City. I am hoping that someone might have seen other chairs of the same design and has some clue as to the maker, etc.
