Empire chair?

Empire chair?

My Mother found this in the early 70's in London, Ontario, Canada. She had it redone and I now have it. I think it is an Empire chair? Please let me know.

Thank you

New York Antique shop response
by: Anonymous

Hello again. Thanks for your input! I heard from the store and he agrees it's virtually identical. He sold that settee some time ago. He says the swan motif is very unusual so they are likely a pair.

I will keep you informed.

Hi Pat,

Nice job finding that exact same sofa online, I guess that wasn't an easy task, spectacular price too!
It seems like you are sitting on a treasure.

Good luck my friend.

I've found what I'm sure is a matching sofa

I've emailed them pictures of my chair. The carvings are identical. I am sure it is the same shop that produced them. I would be they were a pair at one time. Every detail is the same. I will let you know if and when I hear from them.

I am working on an appraisal.

Thanks again for your answers and interest.

American / European
by: Stephane

Hi Pat,

It's difficult to say if it's American or European.
Many American furniture makers were inspired by or trained in Europe, and adapted the typical features.

To make sure I think it's best to find a good appraiser who is specialized in this specific type of furniture. I think it is worth it for insurance purposes for example. This is a link to online appraisers who do a very good job for less then 10$.
online appraisals

I use them quite often for my own antique furniture, and it's way cheaper then letting somebody come over. You can also see previous appraisals on their website, so you can see what quality they provide.

I would certainly consider it, because this is not a 5$ chair!

Let me know how it went, I'm curious too :-)

Success.

Thank you and another question
by: Anonymous

I thought it must be but was torn beween Federal and Empire. The feet had me leaning to Empire. It has all the trimmings. All four feet are the same. It is mahogany. Do you think it is American? The Eagle wings, acanthus leaves and pineapples make me think so. I have been having a hard time trying to value it. I see sofas ($5000.00 - $15,000.00) and arm chairs but no large stuffed settees like this one.

Thanks again so much for your info.

Empire
by: Stephane

Hi Pat,

Nice chair/settee you have there. The arm rests are designed with the swan neck design, and is typical for Empire and Regency furniture. The feet is what they call monopodium (or lion feet) also typical for the late classicism styles. So in short, yes this is Empire. As far as the wood goes I think it must be mahogany.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions!

Success.
