Description of the Guangzhou Style Imperial Zitan Throne ( 1 pair ).

1-) Python dragon(??)?s head is craved at the crest rail of the throne ? signifies the King?s upmost superiority and solemnness.

2-) Each arms of the throne is craved with Python dragon???? with 1 pair of 4 claws clearly seen ( signify the King?s status ).

3-) Throne?s upholstered back panel is craved with Python dragon???? with 1 pair of 4 claws clearly seen ( signify the King status ).

4-) The dragon head of the armrest, mouth agape rest on the tail portion of another Python dragon???? which is craved with leaves.

5-) The legs of the throne gently curved into the usual three dimentional claw-on-ball feet, reminiscent of the 18th century Chippendale style.

6-) This pair of Imperial Throne of China has some distinctive features which are often found in the Guongdong region, such as the extra-wide additional moulding below the waist, the leaf design, the berries design carved on the additional moulding, the flower design and the European influenced three dimentional carving at the arm rests portion. This pair of thrones was made at the imperial workshop staffed by Guongdong cabinetmakers and was gifted to member of the Royal highness. This is an important documentary example of traditional Chinese Imperial furniture made with traditional Chinese joinery and quintessential Chinese design ? dragons amidst clouds and waves and decorated with leaves which provides an opulence that matched the splendid palaces.
