Help! I think I have a gem, ...

the pull is not original...

My wife purchased this desk at a church auction for $10, and wanted to paint it immediately! I held her off successfully, and am now wondering if I was right in thinking this is a fairly old piece. Can anyone help? I think its Cedar, but this could just be because of the figure... It is a fairly heavy piece, and solid.

Any ideas?

Matthew

Curly maple
by: JeffG

It looks like curly maple to me, not cedar. Probably 20th century (top is not a single piece of wood but many glued together), and "country" made (the legs do not seem to taper but go down straight - not made by an experienced cabinet maker). Who could paint wood that beautiful - lots of people love curly maple because of the figuring (natural designs) in the wood. It is not old enough to be considered antique, but all curly maple has some value and is worth much more as is than it would be painted.
