Help what is this????

by Colleen

Please help me date these pieces-I have no idea what decade to even begin with. I purchased these from an antique dealer in Rochester NY ten years ago. I bought a buffet, china cabinet, table and 7 chairs for $1000. I need to sell them but I have no idea how to price them. Any ideas are well appreciated.

George III /Regency
by: Anonymous

The English (or American) mahogany bookcase has definite Gothic arches in its decoration. Furniture with Medieval Gothic influences became popular in the second half of the 18th century, but this style continued until the beginning of the 20th century. I think I recognize handles that are typical to the Regency period, so I would date the bookcase around 1820.
The mahogany chair is a typical Hepplewhite chair. Hepplewhite was a furniture designer during the George III period and is famous for his chairs with a shield shaped back. They were first made during the neoclassicism revival in the late 18th century.
Beware however that this kind of furniture is still made as a reproduction....
