I purchased this trunk about 8 years ago. I was told by the seller that it was late 1700's. I didn't put much stock into it as he didn't seem to have much knowledge about clearly identifying its age. I paid $300 at the time and I am considering selling it. Before I list it, I was hoping to get some solid information on its age and / or origin. Any information you can give me would be much appreciated. Looking forward to your response. Thanks!!!
I have additional photos including the hinges and lock mechanism. It looks like you can only enter 1 photo, so I thought the overall front view would be best.

Hi Jim,

Did some quick research.
First this chest or trunk has bracket feet, that means it can't be 17th century. Bracket feet first occur in William & Mary furniture (1700-1725). However this looks more like a 19th century piece.
Can't see the wood grain very well but going by the color it seems deal wood (kind of pine). You can check our wood types page for pictures of all frequent types of wood used in antique furniture.

I have checked one of my price guide books, and found a similar kind of trunk which is listed for 430$. It doesn't say anything about the origin, so I'll see if I can find some more about that.

For now I hope this helps a little.

Success!
