Restore the height of a 18th century Windsor chair

Anybody have any ideas of the best way to regain the original height of an antique windsor chair? a common problem is that over the years for one reason or another the ends of the chairs legs have become shorter from either decades of use or rot from being wet.Typically anywhere from 1/2" to much more is lost.
I have an 18th century Windsor chair that Id like to restore the height. Originally the seat height would have been about 17" now its 15 1/2".Id be happy gaining any amount of height but ideally get it back to 17" Does anyone have any ideas ?
