Unknown Antique piece

My husband and I have inherited this piece about 30 years ago from his family. At that time it was stored in an attic and has since been stored in the top of our barn. No one seems to know what it is, how old it is, or where it came from. I believe it is some kind of bed. Please see picture. It is made from wood and the legs on both ends fold in.
