What is the use of this furniture piece?

My daughter bought this lovely old piece of furniture but has NO IDEA what the two cabinets to both sides were used for!

I am wondering if it is a hamper for dirty clothes perhaps?

The bottom is missing in each cabinet now but I am not sure if that was someone's "remodeling" project..

Any other info on this piece would be appreciated!
