What is this called?

My husband and I recently inherited a beautiful antique piece of furniture, but we have no idea exactly what it is or what it is called. When my husband's grandmother passed away this piece was taken out of storage with all her other belongings. We know it belonged to her father before her, who came from a wealthy family in Pennsylvania. (So we assume the piece is from the Northeast, but not sure).

It is a very thin cabinet with 5 drawers in the middle section. Then there is a recessed area on each side with 1 drawer and a cabinet door. Inside the cabinets are tiny shelves that are just perfect to hold CD's, but we realize it was not made originally for that purpose! The tiny shelves are all stamped with 1780 on the back, but we don't know if that is the date or something else. The cabinets lock with a tiny metal, old-fashioned key. The drawers are fashioned with dovetail joints. I don't know what wood it is made out of, but the veneer is two toned with a lighter oval shape on the cabinet doors. It stands on eight small 3 1/2 inch legs.

Length: 46 inches
Height: 33 inches
Width: 9 1/2 inches in middle, 7 1/4 on recessed sides

Thanks for your help!

Regency?
by: Freddy

Hello Amanda,

Beautiful furniture that is! Could it be Regency style? I'm not sure but it must be something in that direction. The wood looks like it's a mahogany veneer. And I think the hardware is called "Rosette knob".

Anyways I'm far from an expert so I hope somebody will come along to give you more information.

Take care.
