What is this??

Hi,
My husband has had this piece in his garage ever since we married. It was given to him by someone who owed him money for a job he did (totally unrelated to story). It has sat in pieces until I decided to clean it up a bit and put it together. We wish to get rid of it and have had a couple of "vaulers" come around 5 yrs ago now and they didn't give him any idea of what it was and how much it would be worth, they just offered to take it off his hands for $5,000 then and there!!! So he declined and was going to look into it again but that was until I came on to the scene..... We are wanting to sell it as is but are not sure of what it is, so until getting another appraisal I thought to ask around if anyone knew about it or around the value it might be also how old it is.......have taken several pics so i would be interested in your thoughts,
