Windsor chair

I have a comb back, not your typical Windsor chair.
I think from the floor up its about 4 feet from the floor.
It has a semi-circular back with a splat and top spindle row of 9 spindles and bottom spindle row of 15 spindles.
The legs are raked. The ends of the arms are
carved, not a lot.

The person my family bought it from says it is
either maple or mahogany. I'd like the
descriptive words for this wood.

Also, why some Windsor chairs sort of low backs
but with all those spindles. I know it
sat at the head of someone's table.

When I bought it , it was covered in black paint and
I sanded and stripped it down, there is hardly any
grain and it isn't reddish, neither are there knots,
or obvious grain...but it doesn't look like most mahogany
furniture I've seen.
